The Role of Universities in Fostering Social Change

Universities play a vital role in fostering social change by providing students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to address the complex challenges facing society. As Timothy Pirinduo, deputy registrar for human resources at the Lutheran University of PNG, aptly puts it, “Universities are the medium students attend to fulfill the needs of society.”

The Impact of Universities on Society

Universities have a profound impact on society, extending far beyond the confines of the campus. Here are some ways in which universities contribute to social change:

  • Promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills: Universities equip students with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to tackle complex social issues. Fostering diversity and inclusivity: Universities provide a platform for students from diverse backgrounds to come together, share their experiences, and learn from one another.

The students were given a tour of the campus, which included the library, computer lab, and sports facilities.

Orientation Week: A New Beginning for LUPNG Students

The orientation week for LUPNG began on Monday, marking the start of a new chapter in the lives of the students. The week-long event was designed to introduce the students to the university’s administration, facilities, and services. The orientation week was a crucial step in helping students transition from their previous educational institutions to the new environment.

    Administration Unit

The administration unit was the first stop for the students during the orientation week. Mr. Pirinduo, the bursary officer, Mr. Daniel Biti, and Mr. Panu Kasar, the ICT director, addressed the students.

    The Project Background

The project aimed to enhance the communication and collaboration between the LUPNG institutions in Banz, Madang, and Lae. The existing infrastructure was inadequate, leading to difficulties in sharing resources and coordinating activities.

“A policy will be set in place to monitor such issues and deter them.”
