General Disclaimer

Not Financial, Legal, Career, or Academic Advice

PhDGrind’s calculators — the stipend vs cost-of-living calculator, the funding runway calculator, the dissertation writing-pace planner, the time-to-defense countdown, the conference budget calculator, and the citation & h-index estimator — produce general estimates. They do not constitute financial, legal, career, or academic advice, and they are not an official statement of what your program, funder, or institution will pay, require, or accept. The figures they return are planning aids, not guarantees. For anything with real money or your candidacy riding on it, consult your department, your graduate school, your funding office, your advisor, or a qualified professional.

You Supply the Figures

Stipend amounts and pay schedules, rent and cost of living, funding durations and top-up rules, dissertation length and formatting requirements, defense and viva timelines, conference costs and reimbursement policies, and the citation conventions of your field all vary by university, program, and country and are adjusted over time. Because of this, our tools ask you to enter those figures rather than assuming a single program’s rules. A result is only as accurate as the numbers you provide, and it is your responsibility to confirm the correct, current values for your situation.

Why Real Numbers May Differ

Amounts and dates in practice can differ from an estimate because of:

Citation Metrics

The citation & h-index estimator computes an h-index, i10-index, and total citations from the per-paper counts you enter. Those counts differ across databases (for example Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science all index different sources), change over time, and are only one crude signal of a body of work. Treat the output as a rough snapshot of the numbers you supplied, not a definitive measure of research quality or standing.
